I love the Rhinogs; a mountain range that is more rugged and less travelled than the overly popular ranges in the north of Wales.

I’ve parked at three different locations during the last few years; west and east of the peaks of Rhinog Fawr and Rhinog Fach and also north west in Cwm Bychan.

East and west of Rhinog Fawr/Fach seem to be the most popular entry points to the Rhinogs.

Parking: West

Western Approach: In November 2024 I parked just outside Maes y Garnedd Farm (in Cwm Nantcol) which is at the end of a long single-track road from Llanbedr (just south of Harlech).

There is a signposted path next to the farm that leads into the hills.

The farmer has allocated a few spaces for vehicles and there is a sign asking for £3 – I left the cash in the farmhouse porch as no one was home when I knocked. I suggest writing your car’s reg number on a piece of paper if you visit in the busier summer months:

Parking: East

Eastern Approach: In early 2024 during an earlier visit, I parked on the edge of the forest plantation and approached the Rhinog mountains from the east.

Parking: North West

I know there is a farmer’s car park (£3 in 2021) at Cwm Bychan, next to the lake and there’s a lovely hiking route southeast up to Rhinog Fawr but I haven’t been here for several years so I can’t comment further on the parking situation:
